Increasingly, the characteristics of individual prefectures are being picked up by TV programmes such as The Secret Kenmin Show.
While prefectural ranking websites and other sites are gaining in popularity, we found an item of interest in which Niigata is ranked number one for some reason.
Niigata City ranks first in the country in terms of grapefruit consumption!
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications conducts statistical surveys of households, and the average figures for 2006-2010 show that Niigata City ranks first in the country in terms of grapefruit consumption!
Its consumption is 5, 329 g per year; the national average is 2, 587 g per year, which is more than double the difference! These are astonishing figures.
The prefectures in the Kanto region are in second place, followed by Saitama, Tochigi, Gunma and Ibaraki prefectures. On the other hand, grapefruit consumption tends to be lower in western Japan, where citrus fruits such as mandarin oranges are widely grown.

Why on earth is grapefruit consumption so high in Niigata?
Why on earth is grapefruit consumption so high in Niigata Prefecture?
I have tried to find out, but it is not easy to understand why. Do they drink fresh grapefruit sours at home because of their love of alcohol?
The mystery only deepens...
We would very much like to receive comments and messages from anyone who has an idea about this! We would be happy if we could solve this mystery with the feedback we receive on Niigata Repo.
