Niigata is associated with rice. Niigata is associated with rice. Although Niigata Prefecture has such an image, it also has a wonderful rural landscape.

One of these is the Kitagoyokawa Rice Terraces in Sanjo. It has been selected as one of the 100 best terraced rice fields in Japan. An aerial video of the terraced rice paddies of the Kita-gohyakawa River was found on Youtube. Please have a look.

The terraced rice paddies of Kitagoyokawa are spread out at the foot of Mt Kurigatake. Along the mountainside, large and small rice paddies are packed in bumpy rows. The rice paddies on the plains are compartmentalised and look a little tasteless. In contrast, terraced rice paddies make use of the terrain to combine rice paddies of various sizes.

The mountains, rice fields, trees and houses blend into the natural landscape, creating an atmosphere reminiscent of a nostalgic hometown. The terraced rice paddies of Kita-Gojokawa are only a 30-minute drive from Sanjo City, so you can easily visit the area on a whim.
